while europe was drowning into medieval darkness, natural sciences were flourishing in the arab world all the way from spain to india. based mostly on the knowledge of the ancient greeks, islamic philosophy, medicine and mathematics had their golden age between the 9th and 13th centuries. the rise of natural sciences along with the fundamental prohibition of figurative images led to the development of an immense tradition in non-objective decoration. geometric ornamentation can still be seen covering great parts of religious and secular buildings.

while trying to outsmart our natural environment we generate a tremendous failure record and leave a heavy legacy of debt to the generations to come. considering the past, both distant and recent, it is ridiculous to believe that nature can be conquered or tamed. nevertheless, we don't give up. short term solutions are constantly being applied to quench our civilisation’s thirst to subdue and to possess. we keep forgetting that this is a predictable race, whereas nature is always a step ahead.

“just like many others, i happen to associate modernity with the western world of the past four centuries and more importantly with its inherent pursuit of progress by all rational means. scientific advancement, however, has only accelerated our circular stay on this planet, disregarding the values of all non-western cultures and ignoring the finite nature of all earthly resources. there can be no such thing as progress in a round world. spirals and circles are simply incompatible, as they do not belong to the same metaphysical dimension.”

progress vs. nature: contemporary non-objective painting is the debut solo exhibition of georgi dimitrov. it includes compositions from the years since the artist’s return to bulgaria. after a few years of work and studies in africa, america and new zealand, he graduates in political science/international relations from victoria university of wellington and returns to sofia in 2004. since then, employs various media such as non-objective painting, short film, video performance, photography, music and text. his works concern topics such as modernity (i.e. the belief in progress through rational means), human nature and subjectivity, the beauty of absurdity, inter-dimensional transformation of objects, etc. he aims at achieving one highest ratio between the scale of an idea and its optimised visualisation.

опитвайки се да надхитрим естествената си среда, ние бележим провал след провал и по този начин оставяме непосилен дълг за идните поколения. ако погледнем назад в миналото, ще установим нелепостта на вярването, че природата може да бъде покорена или опитомена. въпреки това, ние не се предаваме. непрестанно прибягваме до краткосрочни решения, за да утолим цивилизационната си жажда за превъзходство и собственост. природата е винаги крачка пред нас, докато ние забравяме, че това е една напълно предвидима надпревара.

„прогрес срещу природа: съвременна безпредметна живопис” е първата самостоятелна изложба на георги димитров и включва композиции от годините след завръщането му от нова зеландия. авторът е роден през 1980 г. в бургас, където завършва хуманитарната гимназия в града, а по-късно следва международни отношения в софия и уелингтън. след няколко години учение и работа в африка, америка и нова зеландия се завръща в българия през 2004 г. оттогава изразява идеите си чрез безпредметна живопис и дигитална графика, кратък филм, видео пърформанс, фотография, музика и текст. засяга теми като модерността (т.е. вярата в прогреса), човешката природа и субективитет, красотата на абсурда, пренасяне на обекти през различни измерения и др. в работите си цели да постигне най-високо съотношение между значимостта на една идея и нейната оптимизирана визуализация.
